Choosing Safe Essential Oils for Babies

When it comes to safe essential oils for babies, not all oils are created equal. A few oils are widely considered gentle enough for limited use with infants:

Even these baby-safe essential oils should be used sparingly and properly diluted. It’s always wise to perform a patch test on your infant’s skin (near the foot, for example) to ensure there’s no adverse reaction. But never apply the essential oil directly, always mix it in some carrier oils, like Jojoba oil or Sunflower oil.

Proper Dilution and Application

Dilution is critical for using essential oils with infants. Babies’ skin is extremely sensitive, so it’s important to mix each drop of essential oil with a carrier oil—like sunflower oil, or jojoba oil—to reduce potency.

The recommended dilution ratio for infants can be anywhere from 0.25% to 0.5% essential oil in a carrier. That might sound like a minuscule amount, but it’s typically plenty for a baby’s gentle needs.

Here’s a quick guide:

       0.25% dilution: 1 drop of essential oil per 4 teaspoons of carrier oil.

       0.5% dilution: 1 drop of essential oil per 2 teaspoons of carrier oil.

Apply the mixture to the soles of the feet or use it for gentle baby massage, avoiding the face, hands, or any areas of broken skin. Never ever give your baby essential oils orally.

Diffusion Do’s and Don’ts

Diffusing is a popular approach to incorporate essential oils for infants while maintaining a minimal risk. Choose a high-quality diffuser, add water according to the device instructions, and just a drop or two of your chosen safe essential oils for babies. 

Diffuse in short intervals (about 15-30 minutes at a time) and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Watch your baby for any signs of respiratory discomfort or irritation. If you notice sneezing, coughing, or any adverse reaction, discontinue use immediately.
