Citronella Essential Oil Benefits & Uses

Citronella essential oil comes from the cymbopogonnardus plant, a type of tall flowering grass that grows in tropical regions of Asia. A close relative to lemongrass, citronella (“lemon balm” in French) is widely cultivated in China and Indonesia and has been used for centuries in traditional folk medicine. To make citronella essential oil, the leaves of the plant are harvested and steam-distilled. Today, citronella essential oil is most commonly found in natural insect repellents, candles, and body care products. It has a fresh, lemony scent and comes with many benefits — from warding off insects to soothing the skin. Keep reading to find out why and how you can incorporate it into your natural wellness routine.

How to Safely Use Citronella Essential Oil

Citronella essential oil can be irritating to some people and should be used sparingly and with caution by pregnant women, and around children and pets. As with all essential oils, you should never apply citronella essential oil to the skin directly and always combine it with a carrier oil before use. It’s best to conduct a skin patch test before applying it to a larger area. Citronella essential oil should only be applied topically or inhaled and not ingested. "I recently researched the best treatment for dry skin and scalp...I then came across some helpful info on the benefits of Jojoba oil and decided to look for an organic brand. Your oil is truly wonderful. I now use it exclusively for skin and scalp, only adding frankincense essential oil for its calming effects. This combo is exceptional. I'm very glad I found Cliganic."
